EU: Barley production forecast to reach 53.472 mln tonnes in 2022/23
The EU Commission’s April 29 barley S&D balance report puts the EU-27 2022/23 barley production forecast at 53.472 mln tonnes vs. 51.972 mln tonnes in 2021/22, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their June report.
With imports seen unchanged at 1 mln tonnes, domestic barley consumption is forecast to increase to 44.603 mln tonnes from 43.905 mln in 2021/22.
Exports including malt in grain equivalent are seen at 9.625 mln tonnes (up from 9.5 mln tonnes in 2021/22), and ending stocks at 4.345 mln tonnes vs. 4.101 mln during the previous campaign.
EU barley exports to 3rd countries in July 2021 - May 30, 2022 were 6.78 mln tonnes vs. 7.12 mln a year ago.
The monthly MARS report warns of dryness in many EU regions, most of all in Spain, France and the eastern Balkans. Yields will be affected, nevertheless winter and even spring barley will produce correct crops, better in the north than in the southern and western part of the continent, also in the UK.
At the end of May Coceral estimated the EU-27 barley crop at 53.14 mln tonnes vs. 52.2 mln last year.
