Barley news China: Government making all possible efforts to reduce food shortage and necessity for imports

China is desperately short of food, 130 mln tonnes of grains and soybeans. The administration supports domestic production as much as possible and makes efforts to reduce imports. Origins of imports are more and more diversified (less dependence on the U.S.), and expensive items are neglected, e.g. barley and sorghum, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report earlier in June.

The malting industry is using the winter barley crop of the Shanghai region, which was never done in the past because of its unstable germination. Also, wheat malting is replacing barley to a larger extent. The blockade of Australian barley is hurting the Chinese much more than the Australians, the Gauger analysts said.
