Barley news World: War in Ukraine could lead to up to 60 mln tonnes of new crop grains missing in world markets

The Russian-Ukrainian war continues in an unbelievably cruel way. All governments of the world and the United Nations are aware of the danger caused by the war. If Ukrainian exports remain closed, 22 mln tonnes of old crop and 55-60 mln tonnes of new crop grains will be missing in world markets, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in April.

Ukrainian winter grains had been planted, part of spring grains (50%?) will hopefully be seeded as well, and will they be harvested? And can they be exported? Rail transport across the Western borders will be a small help, the trade hopes to ship 10 – 15% of the normal quantities that way.

Russian exports from the Black Sea have been resumed, and so far it looks like an almost normal harvest and a moderately handicapped Russian export year. But embargoes, insurance, payment and navigation problems exist and will become worse, if the war continues.
