Barley news EU: Malting barley balance barely even (on paper) this season

Domestic demand for 2-row spring barley in selected EU countries (main producers of malting barley) is forecast at 8.350 mln tonnes, 6-row winter at 1.800 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report in December.

The figures do not include Baltic and Balkan countries, as they do not affect the overall EU balance. The balance is barely even (on paper), is optimistic for the selection of malting barley and omits all future exports. It does not take into account production losses caused by inferior qualities, e.g. hl-weight and small grains, regionally also proteins and physical condition. In any case it is the tightest possible balance, imposing large financial risks on the industry and requiring use of compromise barley and other grains. Market prices are at record highs.

The industry needs an early and good harvest in 2022, on which too many brewers and maltsters already rely. While there is hardly any offer of crop 21 barley, crop 22 is regularly offered and trading; however, the price difference between the two crops has narrowed.

Winter grains have been planted on time and are in good condition in the EU. The planted acreage does not leave much place for a larger spring barley acreage in most EU countries.

Winter barley acreage in France: share of the variety KWS Faro has reached 65%, Etincel down to 20%. French farmers planted 125,000 ha of winter barley varieties in autumn, expecting a good combination of high yields and good qualities.
