Russia & Ukraine: Region down 1.2 mln tonnes versus 2020 barley output
Rumours are swirling that the Russian government may alter the export tax structure (yet again) and apply a quota system (for both wheat and barley) on top of the existing export taxes with a main intent to retain grain stocks for domestic usage, RMI Analytics said earlier this month.
Barley production estimates are: Russia at 18.5 mln tonnes (down from 22.1 mln in crop 2020) and Ukraine at 10.3 mln tonnes (up from 8 mln in 2020). Combined, the region is down 1.2 mln tonnes in the face of strong global demand.
Ending stocks are estimated to drop bot in Russia and Ukraine, creating a near empty pipeline heading into crop 2022.
