Barley news EU & UK: Spring malting barley selection quite high this year in France

France’s spring barley production is estimated at 3.27 mln tonnes this year, preferred varieties account for 2.6 mln tonnes of the crop, selected as malting quality – 2.3 mln tonnes, which is a very high share, H. M. Gauge GmbH .

The nation’s winter barley production is reported at 8.13 mln tonnes, with preferred varieties accounting for 3.85 mln tonnes, selected malting quality at 1.8 mln.

Planet is still the dominating 2RS variety, as to 6RW KWS Faro has pushed Etincel from the first place, it is reported.
In Germany, the spring barley acreage of 300,000 ha is the lowest ever. 2RW barley has lost its acreage already in past years, the premium above feed barely is too low, farmers have reduced the production to less than 100,000 tonnes.

All experts claim that the export surplus in Denmark will remain below 1 mln tonnes in spite of the good malting barley premium.

The U.K. has full access to the continental markets. Local traders expect exports of 600-800,000 tonnes, half of which malting barley, because logistics cannot handle a larger volume.
