EU: EU farmers focus on winter barley planting

With the EU barley harvest complete and the supply and demand situation quite clear, the focus has turned to getting winter barley planted, RMI Analytics report.

About 50% of the EU-27 and UK barley production are winter varieties. Germany (feed) and France (malting barley) lead the way in terms of winter production, followed by the UK, Romania, and Hungary.

Planting conditions are good with a general ‘dry’ period helping support planting .

The market anticipates increased winter barley area (France +3-4%). Farmers like winter barley due to high prices, earlier harvest timing, and good crop 2021 harvest results.
