Malting news USA: Malt production could drop due to barley shortage – analysts

The operational (pre-covid) U.S. malt capacity is estimated to be 1.9 mln tonnes, equal to a barley demand of 2.4 mln tonnes, the H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in October.

The nation’s barley crops were destroyed by the long-lasting drought and heat wave, and also by rains during harvest, although somewhat less than in Canada. Idaho and the smaller production states Wyoming and Colorado with their irrigated fields did better than their eastern neighbours states.

As barley imports will not come from Canada, the U.S. maltsters are expected to import from other origins, likely about 100 – 200,000 tonnes, the analysts estimate. Also malt production may drop, while malt imports increase. Commercial and intra-group malt exports to Mexico will be negligible and must be replaced by deliveries from Australia and Europe.
