Barley news Canada & USA: Barley production forecast at 6.8 mln tonnes for Canada, 2.4 mln for the US

Barley production estimate remains at 6.8 mln tonnes for Canada (unchanged) and 2.4 mln tonnes for the US (up from 2.2 mln in September), RMI Analytics said in their latest report published earlier this month.

The USDA raised US yields forecast slightly, but ending stocks will still be a zero at crop end.

The severity of the drought conditions in Canada will carry into next year unless sufficient moisture is received from now to spring. Without a recovery of subsoil moisture levels, the spring planting of crops could shift dramatically, which may actually benefit a lower input crop, like barley. With good soil moisture, canola will gather significant farmer interest for crop 2022 due to the high prices and net return potential for this crop. Wheat (including durum) will be aggressively competing next year for planted area as well, making the barley recovery from the crop 2021 problems quite challenging, the analysts said.

The price indication for Canada is quite higher this month, at around USD400/tonne, and remains highly theoretical given the crop situation. The range of quality is very wide and the industry continues to search through selections to determine what is usable for malting. The need for imported barley to balance quality (high proteins locally is a major issue this year) is almost a certainty and it is rumoured that two cargoes from Europe have been bought.

Reported malting prices signal attempts at keeping as much barley as possible for malting (domestic or export). With an expected higher demand from the US, off-shore exports from crop 2021 will be minimized to a large degree, but despite all these efforts, North America is in deficit for quality malting barley.
