Brewing news Canada, BC: Giant's Head Brewing opens up its doors in Summerland

A new brewery has opened up its doors in Summerland and hopes to make its mark in a community they feel is already well known for ciders and wine, Castanet.net reported on October 9.

Giant's Head Brewing officially welcomed in diners and drinkers on October 7, after revamping the spot that used to house Breakaway Brewing Co, which closed their doors in August.

"My father-in-law and I have always loved beer and always wanted to get into brewing. We finally got the chance to do so and we jumped right in with both feet,” Erik Hansen, the GM for the new brewery explained.

“Summerland has always been a nice community that we've enjoyed coming to for a long time and it was definitely a spot because it was a brewery before, we definitely wanted to come in and get to not start from the beginning but we had a little help already done.”

The name was chosen from the popular local mountain.

“We hope that we bring the brewery culture to Summerland and we hope that we're just another one to stop at,” Hansen added, referencing the eight breweries close-by down south in Penticton.

“[Summerland] has really done well with cider and fruit. So I think this is gonna be our first big venture in beer.”

Hansen not only works to run the restaurant side, but helped design the kitchen menu and brew the beer.

“My history is I've been in the culinary industry for 10 to 15 years now and I've always had a passion for beer and wanted to really get out there with the beer.”

The brewery aims to have something for everyone, with a light raspberry vanilla cream ale, to a dark hearty stout and everything in between.

“Our menu has a lot of different types of food. We kind of stayed with traditional pub style food, but a little bit higher end. So burgers, fish and chips, and a few flatbread pizzas.”

And so far, the feedback from the community has been positive.

“We've got great feedback, along with the food, along with the beer. They love the atmosphere and how we've cleaned up the place.”

The family owned and operated brewery is located at 13224 Victoria Road North and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
