Brewing news USA, CO: Factotum Brewhouse to close after six years in business

Factotum Brewhouse in Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood will close after six years in business, the owners announced on September 13. The last day for beer drinkers to grab a pint will be Oct. 9, The Denver Post reported.

In a lengthy note to customers, brother-and-sister ownership duo Laura and Christopher Bruns said the decision to close came after a rent dispute with their landlord. They are currently helping staff members find placement at other local breweries.

“There are a lot of moving pieces to the story but the short story is that our landlord has decided to lease the space to a higher paying renter,” the owners said in their announcement. “We have known this was a possibility for some time, but had hoped that business income and rent demands would soon align.”

The Brunses opened Factotum in 2015 with the intent of sharing their brewhouse with local home brewers, who use the professional equipment and take over a guest tap at the taproom. About 40% of the beers available at any given time are created in collaboration with a brewing partner, Laura previously told The Denver Post, adding no style is off limits.

As for their next move, the Brunses said they’re unsure. Speaking by phone, Laura said they may consider reopening Factotum in a new space in the future, but that they’d also been offered the opportunity to brew at other breweries.

“We’re trying to keep ourselves open to variety of things manifesting out of this,” she said.

Nonetheless, the owners plan to take a hiatus to focus on their health and families following a stressful year as small business owners. But first, Factotum plans to throw an Oktoberfest-themed closing party on Oct. 9. Details are forthcoming, but Laura said to expect live music, food and items such as glassware and t-shirts for sale.
