Hops news Germany: Hop crop expected to increase by 2% this year

The official estimates for all German hop growing regions have been published recently. Yields are expected to be at least in the long-term average, while the total volume is expected to be around 2% higher than in 2020 (at 47,845 tonnes this year), HVG reported on August 27.

Due to the good weather conditions, the crops have developed well which will probably result in good alpha acid values. However, due to the abundant rainfalls, fungus diseases (downy mildew) could develop well. Weather conditions in the upcoming days will show how this will influence the crop.

Besides, the cool and damp weather has delayed hop development. Therefore, harvest will start around one week later than usual.

The International Hop Growers‘ Convention (IHGC) published its crop estimates on August 16. Based on this, HVG expect a total crop of approximately 127,000 tonnes. This would mean an increase of approximately 3,000 tonnes (2%) compared to the previous year.
