Malting news EU: Malt production running again at almost 100% capacity

As malt production is running again at almost 100% in all EU countries, final figures of the crop year will show only a minor production loss vs. pre-corona years, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in July.

Most export industries have produced their full capacity program anyway, only inland maltsters had to shut down part of their production temporarily.

Even before the lockdowns malt supplies in the EU had been tight. The few hundred thousand tonnes, which were not produced, are clearly missing now, as beer sales and malt call-offs in June/Sept will be particularly large, at the end of a long corona lockdown. There are reports of rationing of malt deliveries and swapped commitments between maltsters. Short old crop barley supplies and a possible late harvest aggravate the situation.
