Brewing news USA, MA: Powder Hollow Brewery opens new location in Massachusetts

A brewery with roots in Connecticut has found its way to South Deerfield, The Recorder reported on September 18.

Powder Hollow Brewery, which opened its flagship location in Enfield, Conn. in 2014, opened its doors to customers on September 18 at its new location at Yankee Candle Village in the location of the former Chandler’s Restaurant.

“We’re excited to open up and share what we have with Western Massachusetts,” said Mike McManus, owner, founder and CEO of Powder Hollow Brewery.

McManus said he toured other sites in Western Massachusetts, but none stood out to him as much as the South Deerfield location at 25 Greenfield Road.

“When I walked into the building, I could immediately see the vision I was trying to create,” he said.

Wade Bassett, director of retail operations at Yankee Candle Village, said in a statement that the addition to Yankee Candle will offer guests a place to relax.

“Powder Hollow Brewery is constantly experimenting with different flavors and brewing styles, but their commitment to exceptional guest service is what makes them stand out,” Bassett said. “This has been an exciting renovation process and we are delighted to share this incredible new space with Powder Hollow.”

In addition to building the area for the bar and brewing system, McManus said the interior of the space has also been under renovation. Some walls were removed to provide a more open feel.

McManus plans to locally source his ingredients.

“The entire point of us putting the three-barrel system … is to be able to go to the local farms and use the local ingredients to test out and develop new recipes,” he said.

The brewery also plans to partner with Hillside Pizza, which has occupied the space for the last two years. McManus said this means brewery patrons can order anything on Hillside’s menu in addition to any beer or wine on the brewery’s menu.

“I love the fact they do so many organic and locally sourced ingredients,” he said. “I think it fits with our brand and what we currently do.”

The South Deerfield brewery will be open daily from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to 7 p.m. on Sundays. McManus said that due to the ongoing pandemic, the brewery will operate with less indoor seating than is typical and will rely heavily on outdoor seating for its guests.

In addition to its flagship location in Enfield, Conn., the brewery has a location in Middletown, Conn.
