Brewing news USA, NC: thport’s Check Six Brewing Company announces its closure

There will be one less brewery in southeastern North Carolina; Southport’s Check Six Brewing Company announced its closure earlier this week, the Port City Daily reported on July 20.

The World War I-themed brewery made the announcement on its Facebook page, saying the decision came after struggles with hurricanes and distribution challenges.

“Greetings all our faithful customers. It is with a heavy heart that we at Check 6 have to close our doors. Please understand that we did not make this decision lightly,” the post announced.

The brewery is veteran-owned and operated by the Hassel and Goldman families, according to the company’s website. Tim Hassel, Noah Goldman, and Norm Weiss began homebrewing in 2006. Mike Goldman joined to help open Check Six in April 2015.

“Check six” is a term fighter pilots use for checking their six o’clock position behind them, the most vulnerable spot for an enemy attack.

“We are grateful for the support and loyalty that we have experienced from all of you,” the post continued. “We are sorry to say goodbye however we will cherish the friendships and the memories that we have made from all of you along the way. The family of Check 6 wishes everyone good health and fond memories. Remember to always Check your 6!”

With its closing, there remains Makai Brewing Company at Ocean Isle Beach and Red Hare Brewery in Shallotte as the only breweries in the coastal Brunswick County region. Good Hops Brewing is located across the Cape Fear River in Carolina Beach, New Hanover County.
