Canada: Spring barley plantings impacted by cold and wet weather
Cold and wet weather impacted spring planting in Canada. It is expected that 200-300,000 acres of last year’s crop will be left in the fields unharvested, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in June.
By May 30, planting of grains/canola/pulses had progressed to 95% in Manitoba, 77% in Saskatchewan and 73% in Alberta. At the beginning of June, in parts of Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan grounds were too wet to allow seeding for another week or two. Therefore in the Prairie farm lands there will be the risk of 10-15% abandoned or very late planted acres, which normally cannot reach maturity before the arrival of winter, the Gauger analysts said.
The USDA forecast of the Canadian barley crop is 7.6 mln vs. 8.8 mln tonnes last year.
