Barley news Australia: Private barley crop estimates are 14 mln tonnes this year

Australia’s private crop estimates are 14 mln tonnes of barley, H. M. Gauger GmbH said earlier in April.

Inland and port logistics have operated well, exports of new crop barley have already surpassed 3 mln tonnes. The Australian trade, but also the USDA, project total barley exports of 8 mln tonnes in the crop year Nov/Oct 2016/17.

There will probably be no burdensome carry-over at the end of the crop year, in spite of the record crop.

Surprisingly, shipments to China were almost 70% of the total so far, a mixture of malting, FAQ and more feed barley than expected. Quality of the Australian barley is almost too good this year; it has reduced the demand for malting barley and battered its premium. Instead Chinese buyers have shown a great appetite for FAQ and feed barley.

Barley shipments to the Arab countries were no more than 15% of all destinations.
