Barley news EU: Large malting barley producing countries publish their planting intentions for 2017

In their latest report, H. M. Gauger GmbH published the following planting Intentions 2017 in the large malting barley producer countries:

In France, winter barley acreage may reach 1.431 mln ha (vs. 1.453 last year), spring barley 430,000 ha (420,000), the analysts believe. Among malting varieties of winter barley Etincel will account for 70% of the plantings, Isocel for 20 - 30%, in spring barley Planet will account for 50 - 55% of the plantings, Sebastian and Irina for 15 - 20%, Explorer for about 10%.

Germany’s winter barley area is forecast at 1.27 mln ha, spring barley at 340,000 ha, both unchanged from last year. According to industry sources, the farmers opted for planting mostly malting varieties Avalon, Quench, Planet, and several others. Recommendation and split up of varieties varies from one Bundesland to the next.

In Denmark, winter barley area is expected at 115,000 ha, (almost unchanged), spring barley at 540,000 ha (597,000). Preferred varieties are 34% Irina, 22% Planet, 20% Evergreen, 9% Quench.

In the U.K., winter barley area is estimated at 430,000 ha. Spring barley acreage estimates still vary from 640,000 to 700,000 ha; the uncertainty concerns plantings in England, from 420 to 470,000 ha. The major varieties are Propino and Planet, Irina will be less than last year. No. 1 in Scotland is Concerto as a distilling type, followed by newcomer Laureate.
