Argentina: Cargill Malt will start the construction of a new malt plant in Punta Alvear, Argentina

Cargill Malt announced on May 18 the construction of a new 145,000-metric tonnes per annum malt plant in Punta Alvear, Argentina. Construction will begin in June 2005, with malt production scheduled to begin in October 2006. The plant has been designed to maximize malt quality, process control, and reliable, timely deliveries to area breweries.

The design includes concrete silos capable of storing 24,000 tons of malt and 40,000 tons of barley. The plant will be built alongside Cargill’s Punta Alvear terminal and port facility near the northern Argentine city of Rosario to maximize synergies in barley origination, barley and malt warehousing, plant operations and the loading of bulk shipments directly to ocean vessels. Truck load-out capabilities will enable the facility to serve domestic brewing customers in the Buenos Aires and surrounding area with just-in-time deliveries.

This new malt production capability will complement Cargill Malt’s existing 100,000 metric tons of annual capacity at Bahia Blanca, Argentina and will serve the growth of brewing customers in the Mercosur region (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay) and other neighboring South American markets including Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Cargill is also nearing completion of the previously announced new malt facility at Efremov, Russia adding additional growth to its malting operations.
