Malting news EU: EU malt exports decline by 5% in July-February 2018-19

EU malt exports as per Taxud statistics were 1.4 mln tonnes by February 24, 2019, 5% down from last year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported early in March, adding that the data looked doubtful.

Interestingly, shipments to Brazil were up 67%, to Mexico up 95%, the analysts said.

Comparing statistics, for the period of July/Dec: malt export estimate is 1.05 mln tonnes according to Taxud and 1.25 mln tonnes according to IGC.

The IGC reports July/Dec 2018 exports of the 5 major world malt exporters of 2.85 vs. 2.9 mln tonnes a year before. As these figures do not include China, Russia Ukraine, Uruguay, the Gauger analysts assume that world trade has rather increased than decreased during the present grain year. Malt supplies have also been enlarged by new malting capacities in the EU, Brazil, Africa.
