Brewing news Japan: Beer and quasi-beer shipments hit record low for 14th straight year in Japan

Beer and quasi-beer shipments in the nation in 2018 fell 2.5 percent from the previous year, hitting a record low for the 14th straight year, data from five major brewers showed on January 16.

The drop reflected higher prices of beer for use at drinking places stemming from higher costs and a decrease in restaurant visits in summer due to blistering heat.

Another negative factor was a demand shift to canned chuhai spirits priced lower than beer.

The overall shipments totaled 393.9 million cases. Each contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

Beer shipments fell 5.2 percent to 193.91 million cases, down for the third consecutive year.

Shipments of happoshu low-malt quasi-beer, carrying lower prices than beer, declined 8.8 percent to 50.15 million cases, also down for three years in a row.

By contrast, so-called third-segment beer-like beverages, priced even lower, grew 3.7 percent to 149.83 million cases, the first increase in five years.

The segment’s expansion was driven by the popularity of the Honkirin, a new product of Kirin Brewery Co., which logged year-on-year growth in its overall beer and quasi-beer shipments.

The other four companies suffered declines in their overall shipments.

Asahi Breweries Ltd. had the largest market share of 37.4 percent, followed by Kirin with 34.4 percent, Suntory Beer Ltd. with 16.0 percent, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. with 11.4 percent and Orion Breweries Ltd. with 0.9 percent.

Also on January 16, the Brewers Association of Japan said it has decided to stop releasing beer shipment data from this year due to a rise in sales of craft beer sold by companies other than the five major breweries.

The statistics, which began in 1992, are no longer good for monitoring the entire beer market, an association official said.
