Barley news Australia: Barley production estimated to be down 33% this season

Australia’s barley production is estimated to have decreased by 33 per cent to 8.9 million tonnes in 2017-18, ABARES said in its latest report published on February 13.

In New South Wales, barley production is estimated to have decreased by 56 per cent in 2017–18 to around 1.2 million tonnes. The average barley yield is estimated to be 1.5 tonnes a hectare, around half of the record high achieved in 2016–17. Area planted to barley fell by 9 per cent to 790,000 hectares.

Queensland’s barley production is estimated to have fallen by 60 per cent in 2017–18 to around 120,000 tonnes. This was driven by a combination of a 7 per cent fall in area planted and a 57 per cent fall in average yield.

In Victoria, barley production in 2017–18 is estimated to have fallen by 34 per cent to 2.1 million tonnes. Average yields are estimated to have decreased by 23 per cent to 2.63 tonnes per hectare. Planted area is estimated to have decreased by 15 per cent to 800,000 hectares.

Barley production in South Australia is estimated to have fallen by around 40 per cent to 1.8 million tonnes, driven by a large decline in the average yield from 2016–17. Barley yields in some major cropping regions were adversely affected by strong winds and hail damage in late October.

Western Australia’s barley production is estimated to have decreased by 12 per cent to 3.7 million tonnes in 2017–18. Barley crops were boosted by the favourable finish to the season, particularly in the southern half of the state's cropping region.
