Brazil: Number of breweries up 750% in 10 years

Number of breweries in Brazil increased from 80 in 2007 to 679 at the end of 2017 – up by almost 750% over the decade, according to a recent report by the nation’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento - Mapa).

Official data only includes breweries producing their brands legally – that is, having registered them on Mapa’s system.

The highest number of breweries is located in the southern part of the country – 287 breweries at the end of last year, followed by the south-east (279 breweries). There are 48 official breweries in the north-eastern part of Brazil, 44 in the central-western region, and 21 in the north.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul is the leader in terms of the number of breweries (142), followed by Sao Paulo (124) and Minas Gerais (87). There are 78 breweries in Santa Catarina, 67 in Parana, 57 in Rio de Janeiro, 21 in Goias, 17 in Pernambuco, 11 in Espirito Santo, and 11 in Mato Grosso.

The increase in the number of breweries is explained by the growing popularity of craft beer in Brazil.
