Brewing news USA, IN: 18th Street Brewery bringing brewing back to Gary’s Miller neighborhood

18th Street Brewery moved its main brewing operations from its original location in Gary's Miller neighborhood to Hammond last year, which not all Miller residents were thrilled about.

Drew Fox's acclaimed craft brewery, which the Chicago Tribune dubbed "Northwest Indiana's second most famous brewery," left the original Miller location at 5725 Miller Ave. open as a brewpub, rebranding it as 18th Street Brewery Tap Room and Craft Cocktails. But now 18th Street Brewery is bringing back brewing to Gary, nwitimes.com reported on November 16.

The craft brewery's main production will remain in a former warehouse at 5417 Oakley Ave. in downtown Hammond, but it will start brewing beers experimentally in Miller.

"18th Street Brewery's Gary Taproom is proud to announce that we will be returning the word ‘brewery’ to our original location in Miller Beach," the brewery said in a statement. "Starting next week, we will have a small open fermentation 10-barrel system setup to further challenge ourselves by experimenting in rustic styles with new technologies. This decision came not only from the request of the community but from our desire and commitment to produce innovative small batch craft beer where it all began in Miller Beach."

18th Street Brewery's initial system in Gary was only three barrels when it first opened in 2013, when RateBeer named it Indiana's best new brewer. The acclaimed brewery is known for beers like its Hunter Stout, Jade Pale Ale, Temporal Purgatory Pale Ale, and The Fox And the Hunted Porter, as well as its Sour Note series of sour beers.
