Brazil: 91 new craft breweries open their doors in the first half of this year
In spite of the crisis in the Brazilian brewing industry, 91 new breweries joined the nations craft beer sector in the first half of this year, O Globo reported on September 21.
Data by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply show that the number of microbreweries in Brazil has now reached 610 with 83% of them situated in the South and South-East of the country. With 122 breweries (20% of the nations total number), the state of San Paulo leads the ranking, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 119 breweries and Santa Catarina with 73.
Although there are no official figures of the craft beer production volume in Brazil, industry observers estimate craft beers current market share at around 1%.
