Ukraine: Barley harvest totals 8.6 mln tonnes this year

Ukraine has started its 2017 maize harvest, threshing the first tonnes of the grain with an average yield of 4.0 tonne, the agriculture ministry said on August 18.

The ministry has said farmers planned to harvest around 4.5 million hectares of maize this year. Last year, Ukraine harvested 28 million tonnes of maize.

The ministry said farmers had completed this year's wheat harvest with 26.5 million tonnes and an average yield of 4.17 tonnes.

They also harvested 8.6 million tonnes of barley.

The overall Ukrainian grain area - combining both the early and the late crops - came to 14.3 million hectares in 2017, including 6.4 million of wheat, 4.47 million of maize, 2.5 million of barley and around 1 million hectares of other grains and cereals.

The ministry has said the country could harvest up to 63 million tonnes of grain this year. Ukraine harvested a record 66 million tonnes in 2016.
