Malting news World: Malt trade forecast to increase to 7.245 mln tonnes in 2017/18

IGC reported in its latest publication the following statistics of malt exports in July/May 2016/17 (in grain equivalent, last year in brackets):

The world’s 5 major exporters jointly shipped abroad 5.486 mln tonnes of malt in grain equivalent (5.682 mln last year), of which EU 3.031 mln tonnes (3.245), Argentina 599 thousand tonnes (733), Australia 587 thousand tonnes (574), Canada 738 thousand tonnes (718), and the USA 531 thousand tonnes (412).

The forecasts for the past and new grain years, for all countries (5 major exporters plus Russia, China, Uruguay, others) are: 6.790 mln tonnes in 2016/17, and 7.245 mln tonnes in 2017/18. Major increases are expected for shipments to Far East Asia, from 2.535 to 2.740 mln tonnes, and for Africa from 925 thousand to 1.095 mln tonnes.
