Brewing news Russia: Beer sales down 3.7% in 2016

Russia’s beer sales amounted to 78.1 mln hl last year, which is 3.7% less than in 2015, new report by Market Analytica said.

Compared to 2012, sales dropped 23%, the report shows.

However, some of Russia’s regions still registered an increase in beer sales last year: Sevastopol – by 56%, Bashkortostan and Mordovia – by 47% each, Kostroma region – by 25.5%, and the Mari El Republic – by 17.7%.

Despite lower sales, beer still remains the country’s most consumed alcohol beverage. The per capita beer consumption last year is estimated at 53.2 litres per annum while in 2011 it was 64 litres per capita per annum. As compared to the peak of consumption in 2007 (81.3 litres), the per capita consumption dropped by 35% last year. Moscow region has the largest per capita beer consumption in Russia (94.9 litres).
