Brewing news Brazil: Craft beer sector feeling impact of economic recession

The protracted economic recession in Brazil has started to affect the craft beer segment in the country forcing brewers to review their recipes and make cheaper beer, Valor Economico reported on June 21.

The craft beer sector which used to grow by 30-40% annually is showing this year an increase of slightly more than 10%, industry sources said. Sales used to be higher for beers that cost R$30-50 per litre but now R$20-per-litre beers are reported to be dominating the market.

“Politic instability has brought along instability of consumption. People increasingly prefer cheaper craft brands and the consumption hasn’t been growing as it was expected. The most popular are the beers that cost R$20 per litre. Sales of more expensive beers have been slow,” said Marcelo Saraiva, president of microbreweries association Bier Hub.

In Brazil, craft beer accounts for 0.7% of the total beer market and is expected to increase its market share to 9% by 2022. The sector’s annual output is estimated at 124 mln litres. Last year saw 148 new breweries open in Brazil, according to data by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, bringing the total number of breweries in the country to 522.
