Barley news Russia & Ukraine: Barley crop forecasts still fair to good in both countries

After late fall planting, dryness and frost crop forecasts in Russia and Ukraine are nevertheless fair to good, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in May.

As per Rosstat, Russia harvested 17.54 mln tonnes of barley in 2016, of which 15.62 mln tonnes of spring barley. Intended 2017 planting are 0.568 mln ha of winter and 7.699 mln ha of spring barley. The barley crop forecast is 16 mln tonnes, minus 9% y/y, exports are expected to recover to 3.3 mln tonnes from this year’s disappointing 3.0 mln tonnes.

Ukrainian (Ministry/UkrAgroConsult) forecasts are: total barley plantings 2.530 mln ha, minus 13% y/y, of which spring barley 1.646, minus 5%. The crop forecast is approx. 8.0 mln tonnes. Exports are expected lower in 2017/18: 3.9 vs. the record 5.2 mln tonnes in the present campaign.
