Brewing news USA, CA: Urban Roots Brewing aims at opening in Sacramento by next February

A former blueprint production facility south of downtown Sacramento would become a craft brewery and smokehouse restaurant, under a proposal filed with the city, the Sacramento Business Journal reported on May 19.

Urban Roots Brewing would occupy a 17,000-square-foot site at 1322 V St., formerly Brownie’s Documat. Though a craft brewery in an industrial building is increasingly commonplace, it’s not on the scale the people behind Urban Roots are envisioning, said project applicant Craig Hausman of Hausman Architecture.

The new site will have a dedicated room for barrel-aging particular beers in addition to a full brewery. And a parking lot at 14th and V streets will be converted into a patio.

Brewer Peter Hoey and Rob Archie of Pangaea Bier Cafe in Sacramento are heading up the project, Hausman said.

Though the application lists the building’s construction year as 1946, parts of it are decades older, Hausman said. Hausman Architects is working with Buehler & Buehler Structural Engineers Inc. to determine what work needs to be done and what can be left in place.

“Old buildings especially, when you have to do reinforced masonry it throws a wrench in,” Hausman said. But advice from Buehler & Buehler helped Hausman determine some parts of the building didn’t need work, which saved both time and money, he said.

At the same time the project is undergoing city design review, Hausman said, he’ll also be putting in for building permits, to get work started as soon as possible. Construction should take about six months, with the goal to have Urban Roots up and running by next February’s Sacramento Beer Week events.

What should result, he said, is a good example of the creative building preservation work his firm specializes in.

“The greenest building is the one you don’t have to knock down,” he said. “It’s nice to see that they did a lot of legwork in what kind of building they were looking at.”
