Barley news World: Malting industry in good mood and optimistic for the coming years

Maltsters are in a good mood and optimistic for the coming years. Barley crops had been variable in the Northern Hemisphere, but are excellent in the southern half of the world, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their April report.

Barley quality and market prices presented no problems, and the outlook is good again for the crop 2017, at least in Europe. Sales and therefore capacity usage are very good, except for the traditional problem regions, Russia, Ukraine, and Chinese inland, it is reported.

Malt markets are affected by variable trends: new capacities, 250,000 tonnes in the EU, 240,000 tonnes in North America, 75,000 tonnes in Africa, 200,000 tonnes in South America enlarge the malt offer worldwide. Good crops in Australia and Mercosur improve the competitiveness of South American, Asian and Oceanic maltsters. EU malt exports have indeed dropped by 12% to 1.7 mln tonnes during the July1/March 28 period. Last year had been an exceptionally strong export season.
