Barley news EU: Barley and malt exports of July-March 2016/17 smaller than in 2015/16

EU exports of the campaign 2016/17 as of March 29 were: barley 3.875 mln tonnes, minus 54% and malt in barley equivalent 2.160 mln tonnes, minus 12% vs. 2015/16, H. M. Gauger GmbH analysts reported.

Other analysts are below the Commission’s production forecast: Coceral 59.5, IGC 61.2 mln tonnes of barley.

Condition of winter barley and timing of spring plantings make the Commission estimate very credible. Latest progress reports of spring plantings are: France and Spain 100% done, South Germany 90%, the Czech Republic 90%, U.K. 20 - 30% after heavy rainfalls, Denmark and South Sweden started planting in March. The bulk of North European seeding works takes place in April.

Feed and malting barley markets saw moderate activities, domestic prices came under some pressure. Altogether it is amazing how well malting barley markets resisted a major break to-date; the reason is, of course, that France was missing all season as the dominant supplier. French crop prospects look excellent, therefore the new campaign will be normal again.
